In 2013 my mother, younger brother, and I took a cross-country car trip from the Florida Panhandle to Colorado. Along the way, we visited extended family in Texas and, of course, stopped at the most random roadside attractions. It was the first time I had seen vast plains and wide open spaces of the Mid-West. The photo inspiration for this work was taken along the Kansas/Colorado border. My favorite quote from the trip? My mom mistaking Pike's Peak in the distance for "a little dirt pile."
